Why is it taking so long for my package to return?
USPS returns packages using the lowest-cost available method, which can take several weeks. Here is why returns are slow and what you can do while you wait.
How USPS processes returns
When a package is returned to the sender, whether because it was refused, undeliverable, or marked 'Return to Sender,' USPS uses the lowest-cost available return method to send it back. This is different from the outbound shipping method, which was optimized for speed. The return journey prioritizes cost efficiency, which means:
- Returns travel via surface mail (ground transport) rather than air in most cases
- Packages may pass through multiple sorting facilities before reaching the return destination
- The process can take anywhere from one to several weeks, depending on the distance and the return routing
This is a USPS system-level process that International Bridge does not control. Once a package re-enters the return stream, we are not able to expedite or redirect it.
What to do while you wait
The most practical step is to contact the company you ordered from and let them know the package is on its way back. Here is why this matters:
- Many retailers will process a replacement or refund before the returned package physically arrives, especially if you can show them a USPS receipt or tracking confirmation of the return
- If the return was caused by an error, such as a wrong address or a missed delivery, the retailer may be willing to reship your order immediately rather than waiting weeks for the return to complete
