I gave my home address but my package wasn't delivered. Why?
If your package was returned or marked undeliverable, the cause is usually one of three address-related issues. Here's how to identify which one applies.
Common reasons a home address may not be deliverable
- The Post Office in your area does not deliver to street addresses. Some communities, particularly in rural areas, Alaska, and certain non-continental destinations, are served by PO box only. USPS does not deliver mail or parcels to street addresses in these areas. If this applies to you, your customers' or your own deliveries will be flagged undeliverable unless a PO box is used.
- Address formatting issue. Even a correctly remembered home address can be flagged if it does not match the USPS address database exactly. Common issues include missing apartment or unit numbers, incorrect ZIP codes, or addresses written in a non-standard format.
- Address is not in the USPS database. New addresses, recently developed properties, or units that have not been formally registered with USPS may not appear in the address validation system and will be flagged.
What to do
- Check with your local Post Office. They can tell you whether your address requires PO box delivery or whether there's a formatting issue.
- Contact the retailer where you placed the order. They will need to update the address on file and arrange a reshipment.

Areas where PO box delivery is the rule
Many rural communities, particularly in Alaska and parts of other non-continental destinations, do not have street delivery available. In these areas, packages must be addressed to a PO box. If you live in or are sending to one of these areas, confirm the PO box address with the recipient before placing the order.
